Format Your eBookWhat file formats are supported for eBook manuscripts?

KDP supports a variety of formats. Below, you’ll find information about our recommended and most commonly used formats.

Microsoft Word (DOC/DOCX)Most DOC/DOCX files convert well to eBooks. However, some files with complex formatting may not convert as well.

Kindle Package Format (KPF)Using KPF files allows your eBook to easily format and fit all Kindle devices. It’s a go-to method for avoiding any formatting issues.

You can create a KPF file using Kindle Create.

What are the benefits of using Kindle Create?
  • Kindle Create takes care of typesetting your eBook so that it works well on all Kindle devices and applications, including tablets, phones, and E-readers.
  • Select from a variety of themes and styles to customize the look and feel of your eBook.
  • Easily create a table of contents page and Kindle Interactive TOC for your eBook.

  • Preview how your eBook looks before publishing.

If you want to change from reflowable to Print Replica or vice versa, you can unpublish the previous version and then add it as a new title using the desired format.

EPUBWe support books in EPUB format that meet the specifications outlined in the Kindle Publishing Guidelines.Use any third-party tool available on the internet to create your EPUB file.

We recommend validating the file with Kindle Previewer before you upload your book.

MOBIWe support fixed format books in MOBI that meet the specifications outlined in the Kindle Publishing Guidelines.

For reflowable eBooks, upload a EPUB, DOCX, or KPF file instead.

Note:
 (.prc) files created with the legacy program MobiPocket Creator are no longer supported.
Use any third-party tool available on the internet to create your MOBI file.

The table above is a list of our suggested and most commonly used formats. Additional accepted formats included but aren't limited to the following:
  • HTML (ZIP, HTM, or HTML)
  • Rich Text Format (RTF)
  • Plain Text (TXT)
  • Adobe PDF (PDF)  Note: We only support PDF files in the following languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Catalan, Galician, and Basque.

* These are suggestions provided by KDP. However, you’re welcome to use the service or program of your preference to create your eBook.
** Kindle App is available for iOS, Android, Mac, and PC.
